Hi James
You will need to remove the consol in order to replace the heater.
you will need to remove the front carpets first, then remove the stereo. the lower consol is fixed to the floor with 4 rivets or screws. remove the gear knob and the 4 fixings and you should be able to jiggle it out.
you could also remove the front seats to make it a lot easier if you are able.
you should then be able to remove the connectors from the 3 switches and the clock multi plug. i found it easier to push the switches though the switch plate to do this. you can then get to the 2 screws that hold up the heater.
dont forget a small bucket to drain the coolant into before you remove the rubber pipes.
hope this is useful

Re: centre consoul
Its a standard mini heater unit.
the heater unit casing will have been slightly modified to accept the upper consol piece.
the upper consol piece is attached by 2 screws i think (one on each side).
you will also need to remove the screen/car/off knob before you can remove the upper consul piece.
there is then a steel deflector plate behind this which is held on with 4? screws.
remove this then remove the remaining screws on the RHS of the casing.
the heater matrix or fan unit can then be removed and replaced.
you will need to transfer the foam from one matrix to the other as new matrix's come without foam. the foam is needed to ensure the air from the fan blows through the matrix correctly.
be carefull when re-assembling that the screen/car/off flap is fitted back is its hinge holes correctly. it is a pain to have to take it apart again because the flap doesnt work. i did this myself about 8 weeks ago on mine while replacing a dripping matrix.

have fun

Re: centre consoul
Although the post is a bit old now I thought it might help posting a pic of when I done mine on R1024. From memory I didnt need to remove the radio box or lower consol. I cant quite remember how I done it now but I dont remember it being a very hard job.

Thats good to know that you can do it without the full strip out.
i couldnt get mine out without removing the lower consol equipment.
i suspected it could be done but i could not slide my heater unit past the rear brackets.
glad you managed though.

aha looks like I must have cheated! Just zoomed in on the original photo and it looks like I bent the bracket out of the way to get clearance. Probably not the best way to do it then but it saves a fair bit of time.
