my car won't start.

Hello Everyone.

I am the owner of ERA R1063.

I am having a problem with it at the moment.
It won't start.

I have checked that there is fuel getting to the carb
There is a spark on every plug.
The engine is turning over fine.

any ideas anyone?

Are the plugs nice and dry? or are they wet like the car has flooded?

They need to be dry and not flooded.

Check timing order is correct

Check you have about 4PSI fuel pressure at the Carb, Gunson Lo guage is great for this.

In all the problems I had with My ERA's all were Fuel Related, 1 was a mickey mouse Jap fuel pump and the other two cars required a carb rebuild.

If you have sparks and are sure of the correct firing order and have fule pressure, I found that disconnecting the fuel pump wiring in the boot inside the tank cover panel then cranking over ussually resulted in the car starting for a few moments, proving the fueling was at fault.

The leads are in the right places.

The Spark Plugs were a bit 'wet' when I was checking for a spark.

There is plenty of Petrol, I checked the pump by removing the pipe to the carb and running the pump into a milk bottle, after only a couple of seconds there was nearly half a pint!!!

Maybe the spark is too weak?
is there an easy way to check?

I think I will try to look at the HT side of things...
Dist, points coil ect...

Hi Andrew

Try disconnecting the fuel pump temporarily as above, and try starting it, engine will use up any excess petrol even if flooded in a couple of minutes of cranking and then might start, my black one I had to start like that prior to carb rebuild, especially when warm.

A new rotor, dizzy cap, leads and plugs would aid a decent spark.

BTW Does the ERA Turbo have points?
Maybe I'm getting confused

Isn't that the bit that is electronic?

No points is electronic Metro Dizzy, If it did run and now doesnt and nothing has been messed with. I would be looking at fueling.

Hi Darren,

I think I've got it sorted out now.
I changed the Dist cap and checked and cleaned , I think, all of the electric stuff and the HT stuff...
and fiddled with the mixture.

The engine was totally flooded, so I took out the plugs and disconnected the fuel pump and turned over the engine, this helped clear out some of the excess fuel.

So, I'm not entirely sure what the problem was, but it seems that there might have been an intermittent electrical fault or bad mixture that initially prevented the car from starting witch led to the engine becoming totally flooded....

Anyway, I think it sorted now, although I still think the mixture is not quite right yet.
