Dodgy Speedo

Hey
Iv been having a few problems with the speedo, the mile guage is no problem, it still puts on the miles but the speed dial is unbelievibly slow in reacting when on the move. Ill stop the car and it will say im doing, for example, 40mph, taking quite a while before returning to 0mph.

Does anyone know why this is? and what do i need to do to fix it?

Not sure how the VDO speedo works but past experience of speedo's is they have a drive running of the cable, this drive connects to the odometer directly via a gear and on the end of the drive there is a magnetic cylinder which spins inside another metal cylinder (1)this in turn drives another drive spindle which is set in some bushes (2)and then throught the speedo face and the needle is connected on end.

Fast speedo's like way way out are due to carp in the area above (1)

Slow speedo's is the area (2) needing some lube.

How you get a ERA speedo apart I don't know.

If your uncomrtable with it all, perhaps contact speedy cables they are experts in refurbing instruments.

Thanks for the help, i think iv decided to take the dashboard board off and send the speedo away. The only problem now being that i dont know how to take the dashboard off.

Has anyone had much experience in doing so?
Some advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi

There are three screws holding it in per the diagram in the dashboard section of the fiche.

One is in the back of the glove box, one is behind the ash tray which you must take out, the other is somewhere under the dash below the speedo, never found that one yet though.

The screw behind the speedo screws into the bracket which was originally used to mount the instruments in a standard Mini.

Once you've unscrewed these, pull the dash forward, disconnect the speedo cable and a multi connector plug. The dash can then be slid out the passengers door.
