Turbo dump valve and fuel tank question.

Post by Thomas_hmlo » Sat Dec 14, 2013 7:03 pm

Thanks for the advice about my engine problem and finally sorted!

Question would like your kind input.

There is an mechanical turbo dump valve. What is the normal situation for the valve to release or activate?

Fuel tank. I am planning to replace mine. Knowing there is
no brand new gas tank for ERA... Should I get a carb tank modify the tubing size or change it to injection tank with a different fuel pump?

I'm not sure what you are asking about the dump valve.
There is a pressure release valve on the plenum chamber which is a sort of dump valve. This is just held closed with spring pressure and allows some pressure to be released when you come off the throttle.

With regard to the fuel tank. I'd convert a standard one, however i do know of people doing turbo conversions and using an injection tank. If you go this route you still need to use the original fuel pump in order to maintain the correct pressure at the regulator.
Insufficient pressure will cause the car to run lean at high revs during boost.

Have a look at this thread on Turbo Mini forum
http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/inde ... tid=474995
they have a lot of information on there for different modifications. They probably have done the best and the worst to the Mini turbo.
You will also find different ways to modify the dump valve in the plenum.
One last thing. Be careful.
As with all forums there is also nonsense posted.

I modified a standard tank.

Because I am running a higher boost I increased the spring pressure on the plenum dump valve by packing behind it and fitted a used dump valve to the plenum from a Saab. The Saab dump valve works well and isn't too noisy.
As I am not too sure if I am going to keep it set up that way I didn't want to spend too much money and I can reverse the mods. I think the Saab valve cost me £10.00 off eBay.
