Rebuilding a T3 Turbocharger
Rebuilding a T3 Turbocharger
Hi All
Has anyone out there rebuilt a turbo charger.
I have a spare one that i need to rebuild for when i strip my engine in the next few weeks.
I have a genuine garrett t3 rebuild kit and have had a look at the spare turbo, however i can't undo the 6 bolts holding the turbo to the exhaust chamber. they can only be attacked with an open ended spanner and don't want to budge. i am worried that i will round off the bolt heads with an OE spanner. any hints?
i will try heating the manifold with a blowtorch this weekend to see if this helps.

Re: Rebuilding a T3 Turbocharger
Hi Paul.
I might be able to get one on 1 of the bolts but the other 5 i cant even get the ring end on them.
Good thought though.
If the blowtorch doesn't work i might resort to grinding the heads off and then drilling the bolts out.
Might have to get some of your expesive drill bits

Re: Rebuilding a T3 Turbocharger
Hi Paul
They are either 13mm ot 1/2" AF
i think i will pick up another 1/2" tomorrow and grind a little off it to get it past the casting. if i can get it to go on, i will try some heat before i try any pressure on the spanner.
Cheers

Re: Rebuilding a T3 Turbocharger
Hi All
Finally finished the rebuild.
It took 2 days to remove the studs in the end.
4 heads broke off with the spanner, the other 2 had to be gound off.
I bought some drills and a stud extractor from machine mart on Sat.
Unforturnately the bolts are hightenile so blunted the drill bits.
I drilled a couple out to the correct size for the extractor but i had no joy. the extractor was crap. i bought the the one with the handle, as i didnt have one. dont buy this one, they are not hardened enough and just flattened its threads.
i bought some titanium trills from B&Q on Sun, and these worked a treat on the bolts, but the extraxtor still proved useless.
I went back to machine mart on Mon morning and bought the other extractor set they do, and a tap and die set.
The extractor was much better but still didnt touch the bolt threads.
in the end i ended tapping new threads.
The refurb of the turbo was a doddle compaired to the stud removal.
Anyway, next task is to remove, strip & rebuild the engine to find out where the bits of metal came from that were attached to the sump plug, and hopefully restore oil pressure.
See you at the shows.
