Air leak under Boost
Air leak under Boost
Hi,
drove today with my Era and recognized a leak under boost.
Tried to locate it with spray, but seems to be just under pressure.
Do you have an idea???
Carb is just redone.

Hi Enne
If you have had the carb off you would have removed the plenem from the orange silicon pipe. Check if the clamps are tight there first if you havent already. An air leak there would only show up under boost pressure.
I've done it myself before
I'm assuming the carb had been refurbished correctly. There are seals on the throttle and choke shafts and the other place the carb could leak is the seal between the carb body and the dash pot.
Other places you could get a leak under pressure are the carb gaskets. There is one between the plenem and carb, one between the throttle cable plate and the carb and another between the throttle cable plate and the manifold. The last gasket i can think of is the inlet / exhaust bracket.
Finally the last places i can think of that you can get air leaks are the pipes.
There is one pipe out of the plemen to the ecu. looking from the front of the car, this goes from the left of the plenem and bends back on itself along the bulkhead, past the carb, into a T piece, one pipe then goes to through the bulkhead to the ecu, the other goes to the fuel pressure regulator. If this one is leaking you will get weak fuel when boost cuts in.
The other pipes (but you shouldnt have effected these with just a carb removal) is the one that comes from a t piece on the turbo. one goes to the waste gate actuator and the other goes to the boost pressure regulater valve fitted to the top radiator bracket. If these leak you will get over boosting problems as the wastegate may remain closed.
I hope this helps a little.
All the best in sorting the problem.

Hi,
just wow!!
Thanks for that list! I only checked the clamps, but they were tight. So, lets the party begin and start the search.
Thank jou for jour help!!!

Re: Air leak under Boost
I have the same problem with mine, it's been like it for ages but I've yet to find the leak. It sounds like it may be the carb itself so I've been putting off a rebuild as apart from the hissing under boost it runs very nicely. Mine only starts to leak above 0.4bar

Re: Air leak under Boost
check also the pipe to the boost gauge from the pipework under the bonnet, the rubber end onto the guage had become brittle and split on my black one, easily sorted.

Good one Paul, i forgot about that one.
There is also the vacuum advance pipe to the distributor too in that case.

Re: Air leak under Boost
Mine seems to be leaking from the throttle spindle on the cable side of the carb. I just sprayed a little carb cleaner at the linkage and the revs dropped off confirming the leak. Luckily it looks like it can be done with ease.

Re: Air leak under Boost
I replaced the offside throttle spindle seal on mine today and it took about 5 mins. The old seal was cracked and split. It's worth noting that the seal is fitted the other way round to a standard HIF44 and there is a plastic washer to prevent the seal from being blown out under boost.

Hi,
had a nice ride today with an other mini.
So, the leak was dirt on the inside of the silicon pipe.
After cleaning carefully the whistling was away.
And the most important of all:----------> the ERA makes a LOT of fun
Thank for your help

That was good news. I'm glad to hear the leak has gone and you are able to enjoy the ERA on the open road.
