Oil pressure switch
Hi folks can any of you good people tell me if the era uses a standard mini oil presure switch if not would it be possible to email me a picture of the switch used many thanks Ian.
Re: Oil pressure switch
Hi there.
the oil pressure switch is standard if you are talking about the one which turns off the oil light.
there is a t piece between the engine and the switch. in the t piece there is a vdo sender for the pressure guage.
the part number for the swtch is shown on the microfische on this site.
if you need the vdo sender, a good performnce car specialist should be able to help. mine came from mdland performance center but they have now closed down.
hope this has been helpful.
Regards
Darren

Re: Oil pressure switch
Hi Darren I thought it was. The problem I have is that this switch provides a earth for the fuel pump feed from the relay and when I attach the white and brown wire the fuel pump begins to run any ideas where I am going wrong or should this happen thanks Ian.
Re: Oil pressure switch
Hi Ian
you are correct, the white/brown oil switch wire does provide the earth for the fuel pump relay.
when the engine is not running the pump should not run unless the ignition key is turned to the start position. the start position overrides the oil pressure switch to make the pump run while the engine is being turned over.
when there is oil pressure (running engine) the pump should run constantly.
the only thing i can think of (apart from a short in the oil wire circuit/relay) that could cause the pump to run when conneted is a oil switch which is stuck on.
does your oil light come on when the ignition is turned on without starting the engine (with the wire on the oil switch)?
if it does, does it go out when the engine is running?
i can scan a wiring diagram for the fuel pump circuit if t is any use.
Regards

Re: Oil pressure switch
Hi all.
I must confess that my visits to the Forum last year was very infrequent. Just browsing today and read this query regarding oil pressure switch. My article in technical, showing the turbo wiring, explains how the oil pressure switch works in conjunction with the fuel pump. The switch operates in the opposite manner to that fitted to the standard Mini engine in that the switch is normaly open and closes when set pressure is achieved. In 2006 I wrote to "Intermotor", who make most uk engine electrical ancilliaries, and received the following reply. I suggest the latter part number is saved or a spare is ordered now from your local factor, as they may become extinct in the future.
Peter
Many thanks for your enquiry
We have 2 Oil Pressure Switches shown for Metro Turbo both are Normally Open Circuit, which means they work in the opposite way to most.
Part No
50670 0.30-0.60 Bar 4.5-7.5 PSI 1982-84
51011 0.19-0.49 Bar 2.9-7.3 PSI 1984-90
The only difference between these parts is a slight difference in pressure.
