Hi all,
As you have probably read in my previous posts i have had running problems since i built the car.
I have gone through nearly everything item under the bonnet to try and find the problem.
my problem has been non smooth running between 2000 & 3500rpm.
i have had to drop it down a gear to get the revs right before it would accelerate.
when it was rolling roaded i was told it was over advancing.
List of bits changed over the two years is as follows:-
Plugs(twice)
disy cap (twice)
rotor arm (twice)
plug leads
ecu
boost pressure valve
Cylinder head
Turbo (due to smoke)
fuel pressure regulator
fuel filter
Distributor
and finally the Carburettor.
As soon as i changed the carb yesterday and tuned it by ear it felt better. I drove it round my estate and it ran better than it has ever done.
I even felt that confident i got Julia to drive it. Last time she drove it she said it was like a tank and refused to get behind the wheel unless it was a last resort.
She couldnt beleive how well it drove.
I will get it rolling roaded again soon to make sure the fueling is right.
I can now start thinking about some shows now.

Not sure what was wrong with the carb.
It wasn't the original one that was fitted to the engine.
When i brought the metro, the previous owners had tried jabbing screwdrivers into the holes on the outside of the carb, i assume in an attempt to find the mixture screw.
One of the core plugs had been dammaged and they had fitted a self tapping screw in it to block it off. unfortunately when the boost came in it dribbled fuel all down the side of the carb.
it was a fireball waiting to happen.
As i had been collecting parts for a while i had a spare turbo carb in my shed which looked prety clean and good.
I gave it a full overhall with a genuine su service kit and fitted it when building the car.
When the car was rolling roaded last year the tuner said it was over advancing.
I put it down to the disy and after a few months managed to get one off ebay.
That didnt sort it either so in a last ditch attempt i dragged the old original carb out of the shed, pulled out the remains of the damaged core plug, drilled and tapped the hole and fitted a nice stainless allen bolt with copper washer. i want to fit a fibre washer asap for peace of mind.
I fitted a couple of new seals and fitted it back to the car.
it started straight away and with 5 mins of tweaking it sounded quite sweet. i took it for a run round my estate and i could feel straight away that it was fixed. It ran smoothly up hill at 30 in 4th. it has never done that.
It must have been something to do with the vacuum to affect the timing but i have never come across a carb doing that before.
Main thing is it is sorted now. Avonpark here i come.

well done, sounds like you can start to have some fun now... I have to get mine sorted for the season, before the season is suddenly here!!

Even more good news, he went for his MOT this morning and he passed with no faults at all. The CO was 0.449 and HC was 201 so i think i can richen it a bit more with out any problems but i will wait for a fresh rolling road.
